Shopping at Trader Joe’s is like Christmas morning everyday. There is always something new that surprises and delights the kid in me. It all started the first time I held their hefty, dark ‘Pound Plus’ Belgian chocolate bar. It was 1987 and I had just moved to Los Angeles leaving my beloved San Francisco behind. We didn’t have TJ’s in San Francisco then. There were a few places that carried imported chocolates like Cost Plus – but nothing that also offered their low prices.
Last year the newest Trader Joe’s opened three blocks from our apartment just in time for the holidays. And they really are a part of the neighborhood. Our granddaughter has the drill down: grab a cart, greet the guard, find three bananas and head straight to the free sample counter. The free sample keeps her occupied while I grab a coffee. Then I can leisurely walk the aisles as grandfather pushes the cart. I am especially impressed by the respectful and friendly manner in which the staff treats the seniors. And they know their names.
But back to chocolate. This year they have created a ‘Pound Plus Extravaganza’ which contains almonds, cranberries and ginger.
Too hard to decide. And how about all of it? And don’t forget the Cookie Butter!
And it doesn’t stop at sweet treats. The flowers are gorgeous. This bouquet of Lily and eucalyptus now holds pride of place in our entry hall. $5.99. How do they do it?
Thank you, Trader Joe’s, for helping to make our holiday a delight.
